Languages
Languages have long been an important element of the BBC's lifelong learning commitment. Today interactive technology is extending what we can offer and opening up new routes for people learning a foreign language.
We provide significant resources in the major European languages and some content in other world languages. Material available ranges from downloadable holiday phrases to extensive courses.
Increasingly we see the interactivity offered by the web as key to language learning. Video content is an integral part of the BBC's provision and within a broadband setting it can be combined with other media to offer an immersive but flexible approach which can be used by learners in their own time and at their own pace.
In June 2008, BBC Learning launched its new Spanish language site, Mi Vida Loca – My Crazy Life – which takes the learner on an exciting interactive journey through the streets of Madrid, the plains of Castile and ending up on the beaches of the Canary Islands. Devised in the form of a docu-thriller in which the learner has to unravel the mystery – and respond to the various characters met along the way – Mi Vida Loca combines real-action video with language teaching and practice.
