Police investigate serious sex attack in Edinburgh

A serious sexual assault on an American student in an Edinburgh close is being investigated by police.

The 22-year-old, who is studying in the capital, said she was attacked between 0400 BST and 0430 BST on Monday in Barrie's Close, near Parliament Square.

She had been socialising in the city centre on Sunday evening.

Police said they would like to speak to a man described as 6ft tall, with blond hair and wearing a blue polo shirt and blue jeans.

Det Insp Scott Cunningham, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "The young woman has been left deeply distressed by this incident and we are extremely keen to speak to anyone who can assist us with our enquiries.

"We would urge anyone who was in or around Barrie's Close between 0400 BST and 0430 BST and saw anything suspicious to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who believes they may have seen the victim throughout the course of the evening and can provide any details of people she may have been with should also come forward as soon as possible."
