The jury in the trial of a man charged with rape has been discharged at Londonderry Crown Court for legal reasons.

Patrick McNamara, 34, originally from County Clare, is also charged with attempted rape, false imprisonment, indecent assault and assault.

He is alleged to have committed the offences against a 45-year-old at his house at Ardanlee, in the Culmore area.

A new jury is to be sworn in to hear evidence.

On Wednesday the court heard the defendant and the complainant had met on 9 September 2008 at a city centre bar and they had shared a taxi to his home.

Mr McNamara told police that the sex had been consensual.

The trial is expected to last three weeks.
