Abortion numbers drop in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly

Abortions in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have fallen from 1,136 in 2008 to 1,077 in 2009.

Cases involving girls under 18 dropped from 148 to 118.

Health officials said the figures proved that improved access to contraception for teenagers and increased sex education was working.

Denis Cronin, associate director of public health for Cornwall, said the drop in abortions among under-18s was a "huge drop in the right direction".

The NHS figures follow a fall in abortions in England and Wales for the second year running.
