The driver of a horse-drawn carriage in York was left with a broken hip after his horse bolted in the city centre.

He was alone in the carriage when the grey horse broke into a gallop near York Minster at 1530 BST on Sunday.

Police confirmed the horse raced through bollards near Goodramsgate, causing the cart to overturn, tipping the driver out.

The animal escaped towards Heworth where a man brought it under control.

Police said no one else was hurt in the incident.

York City Council, which licences the horse and carriages, said it had launched an investigation into the incident.
