A 38-year-old man has died after his minibus crashed into a barrier on the M74 near Glasgow, after it appeared to force a police car off the road.

Police had reports of the bus driving erratically at 0445 BST. Officers tried to stop the vehicle at junction 5 but were apparently forced off the road.

The bus continued north for about three miles and hit the central reservation. The driver died at the scene.

Two male police officers were taken to Hairmyres Hospital with minor injuries.

A section of the M74 between Maryville and Cambuslang was closed in both directions while officers investigated the crash scene.

Strathclyde Police said the Lothian and Borders force had been appointed to oversee the investigation, and appealed for witnesses.
