Man tries to abduct three-year-old in Liverpool

A man tried to abduct a three-year-old girl as she walked along a street in south Liverpool.

Police said the girl was crossing Picton Road, Wavertree, with her mother when they were approached last Friday.

As the mother let go of the girl's hand to get a pushchair onto the pavement, a man took the child's hand and started walking with her down the road.

When the woman realised she grabbed her daughter back and went to a nearby nursery to raise the alarm.

Merseyside Police believe the man walked off towards Picton Clock after the incident, which happened at about midday.

The girl was not injured but her 23-year-old mother was left shaken.

Officers carried out a full search of the area, including all the local pubs, but the offender could not be found.

He is described as white, aged in his late 50s or early 60s, about 5ft 5ins tall, of medium build and with white hair which partially covered his ears.

He was clean shaven and was wearing a short-sleeved dark checked polo shirt with a white collar and beige-coloured tracksuit bottoms.

Police said he swayed as he walked and may have been drunk.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
