A man who went swimming in a stream in Oxford has been found dead.

The man went swimming in Bullstake Stream, near West Oxford Community Centre in Botley Road, on Wednesday.

Police and firefighters were called at about 1815 BST when he did not surface. His body was recovered about two hours later.

The death is being treated as unexplained. Next of kin have been informed but the man, who was in his 20s, has not been formally identified.

Nearby residents said the stretch of the stream, which feeds into the River Isis, was known as Tumbling Bay.

They said it had been used as a swimming area, with a lifeguard, more than 20 years ago but in recent years it had not been supervised.
