Charwood Council staff parking charge emissions link

Staff parking charges based on vehicle emissions are being brought in by a Leicestershire council.

Charnwood Borough Council said it was using a system based on national vehicle tax bands.

From 1 July a daily rate of £1.50 will be replaced by a scale running from free for Band A cars to £5.70 for those with the highest emissions.

Disabled drivers, essential users and those who share cars to work would be exempt, the council added.

'All staff'

The council's lead member for environment and waste management, Councillor Hilary Fryer, confirmed the new scheme would apply to all staff, including senior managers.

"Everybody pays, it is all members of staff" she said.

"And if they use simpler ways of coming to work they may get a benefit. If they cycle to work we actually pay them."

Vehicle tax is banded according to CO2 emissions measured in grams per kilometre driven.

This ranges from Band A - up to 100 g/km - to Band M - more than 255 g/km.
