Bolivia woman 'sold new-born baby for $140'

Bolivia map

A woman in Bolivia has been arrested after admitting that she sold her new-born baby to a woman who could not have children of her own, police say.

The mother, identified as Jesusa Molle, had initially pretended that her child had been snatched from the maternity ward in the central city of Cochabamba

But she later admitted she had sold the child for 1,000 bolivianos ($140; £100) to 35-year-old Evangelina Suarez.

Police also arrested Ms Suarez, though neither woman has yet been charged.

Ms Molle told police she agreed to sell her child because she had been abandoned by her husband and could not afford to support the child.

The authorities said they had yet to make a decision on who should be given custody of the child.
