A new housing minister will be elected by a secret ballot in Jersey's States on Tuesday.

The move follows Terry Le Main's resignation over claims he interfered with a Royal Court prosecution. He has denied the allegations.

Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur has nominated Deputy Jackie Hilton to be minister. Senator Alan Breckon has also confirmed he is standing.

Assistant Housing Minister Deputy Sean Power has been standing in.

It is not yet known if Deputy Power will be nominated or who else might be put forward.

Senator Le Main resigned from his position because he was facing a vote of confidence in the States after allegations he interfered in the prosecution of a property developer.

Mr Le Main had been in charge of the island's Housing Department for 11 years.

He had already announced he would step aside while an inquiry into the allegations was carried out.

The call for the vote of confidence, made by Deputy Geoff Southern, has been withdrawn because of Mr Le Main's resignation.
