Man jailed for raping sleeping woman

A man who raped a sleeping woman at a house in Grangemouth has been jailed for five years.

David Edgar, 49, from Grangemouth, was convicted in July 2009 at the High Court in Glasgow of raping the 48-year-old woman.

Edgar attacked the woman while she slept and carried on even when she woke up and began shouting for help and crying, the court heard.

Temporary judge John Beckett QC placed Edgar on the sex offenders' register.

Judge Beckett said: "You persisted in your determination to get this woman who was asleep and subjected her to a rape ordeal.

"You carried on raping her even when she cried out for help and was weeping. This sentence seeks to deter you and others from taking advantage of sleeping women."

The court heard that Edgar continues to maintain his innocence.
