Murder probe after teenager dies on Merseyside

Police have started a murder inquiry after an 18-year-old man who was beaten in a Merseyside street died in hospital.

Neil Murphy was attacked by two men in Marie Curie Avenue, Bootle, at about 1500 BST on Saturday after he and a friend were chased from Glovers Lane.

Merseyside Police said they believe it was a targeted attack.

Two men from Netherton, aged 22 and 23, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

It is understood the attackers had got out of a red Audi in Glovers Lane, before chasing Mr Murphy and his friend. His friend evaded the pursuers by running into a shop.

Det Insp David Keegan said: "This was a vicious and sustained attack on a young man, who has needlessly lost his life.

"I am convinced that many people in the area will have either witnessed these two men being chased or will have seen the victim being assaulted."

He appealed to anyone with any information to contact Merseyside Police.
