'Mechanical mole' digs Maidenhead water main tunnel

A "mechanical mole" is being used to tunnel underneath a Berkshire town by contractors laying a £2.3m water main.

South East Water is using the specialist technique to install a 75-metre section under a watercourse in the Town Moor area of Maidenhead.

The 3.6km pipeline will run from the junction of the A308M and Windsor Road to the junction of Oldfield Road and Bridge Road, ending at St Cloud Way.

The pipe will provide an extra 2.5 million litres of water to the town.
