Police investigating how a baby came to be abandoned in Derbyshire say a woman seen in the area may have information that would help identify the mother.

The infant was found in a bag outside a pub in Etwall on Wednesday night. Doctors estimated he was one day old.

Police want to contact a woman seen in the village earlier. She is aged between 16 and 20, had long blonde hair and wore jeans and a dark hooded top.

The baby, named Jack by nurses, is being looked after by foster parents.

Three sightings

He was found by pub staff outside the Hawk and Buckle pub, in Main Street, then taken to Royal Derby Hospital.

Witnesses said the woman in question was first seen on Wednesday at about 1730 BST near the Greenwell Medical Centre on Eggington Road.

She was then seen at 1915 BST near the Spread Eagle pub on Main Street and again at 2330 BST on Eggington Road walking from Etwall towards Eggington.

Detectives have urged her to get in touch.
