Danger warning over Cemex quarry lakes at Aylesford

Young people have been warned about the dangers of swimming in deep quarry lakes in Kent.

Police said there had been several incidents of people breaking into the Cemex site at Rochester Road, Aylesford, during recent warm weather.

Pc Becky Ballard said the site was not a summer playground and parents should not let children play or swim there.

She said anyone going to the site was trespassing and also putting themselves in danger.

Freezing water

She said: "I can understand why you'd want to be there, because on a summer's day it looks beautiful and the water is very inviting. But this isn't a country park, it's an industrial site."

Officers have had reports of people damaging fencing to get on the site, and using off-road cycles there, and also swimming in the freezing quarry lakes water.

There have also been five crime reports of criminal damage or thefts of padlocks at the site.

Police patrols in the area have been stepped up and officers are working with Cemex to find ways to limit access.

But Pc Ballard said: "Realistically we can't be there all the time, which is why I want to warn people and make them aware of the dangers."
