A pensioner is in hospital after being hit by a towed van which came loose from its recovery vehicle.

The incident happened on Roxburgh Street in Kelso at about 1615 BST on Tuesday.

Police said the Ford Transit van was on a flat-bed recovery vehicle when it became detached, mounted the pavement and struck the pedestrian.

The 73-year-old was taken to Borders General Hospital where his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Lothian and Borders Police said they had impounded the vehicle involved.

The road was closed for about five hours to allow a full collision investigation to be completed.
