Pair arrested over Southampton coma cyclist

David Baker in a coma after the attack

Two men police named as wanted in connection with an attack in Southampton that left a cyclist in a coma have been arrested.

David Baker, 24, was cycling on Central Bridge when he was attacked by a gang on 8 June at 2340 BST.

A 21-year-old man from Thornhill, was arrested at Southampton Common on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police said a 20-year-old man handed himself in at Shirley Police Station earlier.

John Smith, 26, from Tamella Road, Botley is already charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

An 18-year-old woman was also arrested and released on bail.

Police released a picture of Mr Baker in a coma, and another of him before the attack, in the hope it would prompt witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Mr Baker suffered head injuries and remains in a critical condition in Southampton General Hospital.

Mr Baker's mother, Jane Hiatt, said the attack had been "devastating for the family".
