A plaque has been unveiled on the former home of a Guernsey artist to commemorate his contribution to the island.

Peter Le Lievre kept his artistic talent hidden from all but his closest friends and family.

The first exhibition of his work was staged in 1904, 26 years after his death.

Bailiff Sir Geoffrey Rowland said Mr Le Lievre was a great man who was involved in many aspects of island life.

He said: "He was involved in the Town Church, he was involved in the Mechanics' Institute... he was interested in natural history and archaeology.

"It should not be surprising that with his great love of Guernsey he should do some watercolour that faithfully... depicted Guernsey as it was between the 1830s and the 1870s and we're indebted to him for that."

The plaque was placed at 17 Hauteville where Mr Le Lievre lived for his whole life.
