Girl sexually assaulted in street in Manchester

A 16-year-old girl was saved by a passer-by after being sexually assaulted in a Manchester street.

The teenage victim was attacked near the Soap Box pub in Culceth Lane, Newton Heath on Monday afternoon.

A man in his 20s or 30s demanded her phone number - when she refused he tried to kiss her, then he groped her.

The passer-by intervened and the offender ran away towards the Netto supermarket. Police described it as a "nasty, sexually motivated attack".

'Shocked and upset'

Her attacker is described as being Eastern European or Romanian in appearance, of slim build and about 5ft 7ins (1.7m) tall.

He had short black hair with a slight curl in it and his front teeth were black and he was were wearing a white T-shirt with a logo or writing across the chest, dark jeans and black shoes.

Pc Steven Harris said: "This was a nasty, sexually motivated attack on an innocent young girl that has left her feeling understandably shocked and upset.

"I'm certain that at that time in the afternoon there will have been many people about in the street using the shops or picking their children up from school, so I'm asking anyone who saw some part or all of that to call us."
