Four homes were evacuated after a blaze swept through the Conservative club in Newhaven.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue said they were called to the building in South Way at 0150 BST.

Nobody has been injured but residents in neighbouring homes were led to safety as a precaution.

Sussex Police said there was no "immediate evidence" to suggest the fire was deliberate but the investigation was at an early stage.

Roads are closed and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

A force spokesman said the club, which was closed when the fire broke out, has been "severely damaged".

He said: "The building was still alight at mid-morning on Saturday and it is expected to be some time before firefighters can make the site safe for examination."
