A man has admitted threatening to kill two police officers with a nail-gun during a 13-hour stand-off at a construction yard in Orkney.

Kirkwall Sheriff Court heard 50-year-old builder Laurence Leonard's concerned family had contacted police early on Saturday.

They had discovered a letter in which he made reference to "going out in a blaze of glory".

Firearms officers and negotiators were brought in before he gave himself up.

It later emerged that there was no nail-gun within the office.

The case was deferred for background reports.
