Doctor to battle Captain Jack at TV Choice awards

Doctor Who actor Matt Smith will do battle with Torchwood star John Barrowman in the best actor category at this year's TV Choice awards.

Smith's assistant, Karen Gillan, has also bagged a best actress nomination, while the show itself has been shortlisted for best family drama.

EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street are up for best soap.

Alexander Armstrong will host the ceremony on 6 September. Viewers can cast votes online until 9 July.

Teen drama

Smith and Barrowman share their nominations with last year's winner Phillip Glenister, who plays Ashes to Ashes' Gene Hunt, and Jack O'Connell from teen drama Skins.

The E4 series drama also picks up nods for Kaya Scodelario in the best actress category and best drama series, where it's up against Ashes To Ashes, Torchwood and Shameless.

Best talent show sees a stand-off between three ITV shows - Britain's Got Talent, Dancing On Ice and The X Factor - and BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing.

Glee follows its Bafta nomination earlier this year with a nod in the the best new drama category.

The US musical comedy is in competition with Married Single Other, The Vampire Diaries and superhero show Misfits for the prize.

Soap awards

There are five separate categories afforded to British soaps.

EastEnders stars Scott Maslen and Jake Wood are up against Corrie's Simon Gregson and Emmerdale's Danny Miller for best soap actor.

In the female category, another two Albert Square residents - Nina Wadia and Lacey Turner - go head-to-head with Charlotte Bellamy of Emmerdale and Coronation Street's Katherine Kelly.

Harry Hill's TV Burp and Alan Carr: Chatty Man are named in the best entertainment show shortlist, against Celebrity Juice and QI.

In the best reality show list, Big Brother - currently on its last ever series - is up against Coach Trip, I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! and Pineapple Dance Studios, which was recently axed by Sky One.

People can vote at the TV Choice website until Friday 9 July.
