Man in court over three-hour bank siege in Ashford

A man has appeared in court charged over a three-hour siege at a bank in Surrey.

Matthew Nutley, of Brookside Avenue, Ashford, was remanded in custody at Staines Magistrates' Court.

Fifteen people were held hostage at Barclays Bank in Ashford on Monday.

Mr Nutley has been charged with offences including robbery, false imprisonment, blackmail and making a bomb hoax.

He has also been charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit robbery and two counts of making threats to kill.

No one was injured in the incident at the Church Road bank.

Surrey Police said Mr Nutley will next appear at Guildford Crown Court on 1 September.
