Bank card thefts in Northumberland prompt warning

People using cash machines in Northumberland are warned to be on their guard following three incidents which police believe to be linked.

All involved thefts of bank cards, and took place in the Alnwick, Morpeth and Ashington areas on Monday.

In all three cases a man, speaking in a foreign accent and waving a white envelope, approached people withdrawing cash and asked for help.

They then found their cards had been taken while they were distracted.

The offender is described as being Middle Eastern in appearance, about 6ft tall, and in his late-20s or early-30s and was wearing a white short-sleeved top.
