Clampdown on under-age drinking on Wearside

Police in Sunderland have clamped down on underage drinking to tackle anti-social behaviour across the city.

Officers have carried out test purchases to monitor off-licences when selling alcohol to young people.

Working with Trading Standards, 21 premises were tested last week. Staff working in 17 of the stores sold alcohol to the test purchaser.

They were given the option to accept an £80 fixed penalty notice or face prosecution.
