About 2,000 properties in Exmouth were left without water or a reduced supply after three water mains burst.

South West Water (SWW) said three pipes burst on Pound Lane and Featherbed Lane in the town.

Initially 2,000 properties were affected but that number quickly fell to 100, after SWW "re-routed" supplies.

SWW said that by 1700 BST only 30 properties in Featherbed Lane were still affected and engineers hoped to solve it "within a couple of hours".

The water company said that no schools had been affected by the burst pipes and all those customers considered "priority needs customers" had been contacted and assistance offered.

The burst water mains were reported early this morning with the majority of the water "re-routed" by 1000 BST.

SWW said the cause of the burst was not known, adding that its current emphasis was on fixing the problem.
