Frasier star Kelsey Grammer is to divorce his wife Camille after nearly 13 years of marriage, according to papers filed in Los Angeles.

The filing cites "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the break-up but gives no further details.

Grammer, 55, and his wife, 41, were married in August 1997 and have two surrogate children aged eight and five.

The actor, best known for his role as psychiatrist Frasier Crane in Cheers and its spin-off, has two ex-wives.

Grammer used micro-blogging site Twitter to confirm the news, pleading that his wife not be "treated with any disrespect".

"She is still the mother of my children and any disparagement of her will only hurt the children," he wrote.

In a statement, the actor's publicist asked for the estranged couple's privacy to be respected.

Grammer is currently appearing on Broadway in La Cage aux Folles alongside British actor Douglas Hodge.
