Man in baseball bat park attack on Tyneside

A man has been attacked by two men with baseball bats wearing balaclavas on Tyneside, police have said.

The 23-year-old had been sitting with his girlfriend on a grassed area between Newcastle City Cricket Club and Redhouse Farm Football Club, Gosforth.

The incident occurred at about 1920 BST on Friday. It has been described by police as a "serious assault".

The offenders are believed to have run off towards the main road of Broadway West.

The victim's girlfriend contacted the emergency services. He was taken to Newcastle General Hospital where he is receiving treatment for serious, but non life-threatening injuries.
