East Yorkshire NHS staff asked to consider their jobs
More than 200 NHS workers in East Yorkshire have been asked to consider voluntary redundancy or early retirement.
The government have told NHS East Riding of Yorkshire to slash management costs by more than 40% over the next three years.
Posts affected include management and administrative roles.
A statement from the primary care trust (PCT) said it would try to avoid the need for compulsory redundancy.
Ray Gray, a spokesman for the union Unison, said the decision had been "forced" upon the PCT.
He said NHS staff had been "cut to the bone" over the last 15 to 20 years.
He added: "Wherever they are in the management tree, administrative support tree or clinical tree. Take any of those people out now and it will affect the front line services within the NHS."
He said Unison representatives were having regular meetings with PCT employees.
Staff affected have been given a six week period to express interest.
NHS East Riding of Yorkshire chief executive Ivan Ellul said: "Our management budget for 2010/11 is £8.6m which equates to 1.8% of our current budget of £487 million.
"Not all of the savings will come out of staff reduction, but clearly there will be a need to reduce the number of staff in post.
"We are currently considering a whole range of measures for this including inviting expressions of interest in voluntary redundancy or early retirement.
"We will try as far as possible to avoid the need for compulsory redundancies."
