Northern Constabulary's savings 'suggestion box' copied

A suggestion box-style initiative encouraging police staff to offer ways their force could save money has been replicated by other public bodies.

Northern Constabulary launched its Lightbulb Scheme late last year to help find £2.8m in efficiency savings.

The online project has had about 100 ideas, including changes to canteen opening hours and reducing use of printers and photocopiers.

The suggestions amount to £976,780 in potential savings.

Northern Constabulary has reported in its force eMagazine that the scheme has been adopted by other public sector organisations.
