Two Rotherham families escape as fire spreads

Two families escaped serious injury when a shed fire spread to their homes in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

A 15-year-old girl called emergency services when a smoke alarm alerted her to flames at the windows.

Seven people were led to safety, two children and a grandmother in one house, and a mother and three children from the other.

A fire officer said the consequences could have been terrible had the smoke alarm not gone off.

Crews were called to the scene in Fitzwilliam Road, Eastwood, during the early hours of Sunday.

A spokesman said the fire had started in a shed and then spread along a fence to the outside of a semi-detached building, affecting both homes.

All the people inside the homes were treated for smoke inhalation but did not go to hospital.

Watch manager Chris Clegg said: "We could have been dealing with two much bigger house fires if the young girl hadn't woken when she did and called 999."
