US feels the pinch as prices rise

Soaring food and fuel costs and stagnant wages mean that many Americans are finding their finances under increasing strain.

Figures released on Thursday showed that US growth, which is heavily reliant on consumer spending, slowed in the first three months of 2011 to an annualised rate of 1.8%.
