European Central Bank to buy Spanish and Italian bonds

Uncertainty continues to grip the global financial markets, with European markets suffering extended losses despite the European Central Bank's decision to buy bonds from Italy and Spain.

In the US, where markets opened this afternoon for the first time since last week's downgrading of America's top credit rating, stocks also fell.
