General strike brings Belgium to a halt

Trains, buses and trams were at a standstill and protesters blocked several major roads on Monday as unions in Belgium held their biggest strike in nearly two decades.

The walkout was organised to protest at austerity measures planned by the government, including an increase in the retirement age.
