New York's hand-painted billboards brought back to life
BBC News has been looking at jobs around the world which used to be fairly commonplace but are now vanishing.
The art of hand-painted outdoor advertising was outlawed in the US in 1965 when the Highway Beatification Act called for control of outdoor advertising, putting generations of commercial painters out of work.
Since then technological advances in large scale printing have all but rang the death toll on the profession.
In the past six years, however, hundreds of new hand-painted signs have begun appearing throughout New York City, all the handiwork of Colossal Media, a Brooklyn-based company that is trying to revive the labour-intensive and near-obsolete craft of hand-painted signs.
Paul Lindahl, Vice President of Colossal Media, spoke to BBC News about the traditional methods used by the artists.
