Singing for Spain’s mining culture

Over the past 20 years the number of miners in Spain has dropped from 45,000 to just over 3,000.

And it is set to fall even further as the European Union says state subsidies to mining should end by 2018.

Fierce battles have been fought over the years between striking miners and the Spanish authorities.

And the protests are often accompanied by the famous miners' anthem - sung here by the miners' choir of Turon.

A Song For Spanish Miners is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 at 11:00 BST on Thursday, 4 September and will be available on BBC iPlayer.
