Plans to scrap GCSEs in key subjects in England and replace them with an English Baccalaureate Certificate have been scrapped, as Michael Gove admits they were "a bridge too far".

Plans to scrap GCSEs in key subjects in England and replace them with an English Baccalaureate Certificate have been abandoned by the government.

Education Secretary Michael Gove told MPs the proposals for new exams in English, Maths and Science were "a bridge too far".
