UK 'Moocs' online courses 'following US example'

The UK's biggest online university project has been launched, with more than 20 universities offering free courses.

FutureLearn, sees UK universities entering the global market in so-called Moocs - massive open online courses.

Martin Bean, vice chancellor of the Open University, and Chairman of FutureLearn, said the UK had quickly followed in America's footsteps.

"When the Mooc phenomenon kicked off in the US it was a call to action," he said.

Mr Bean said the courses would expand people's horizons.

"Sometimes it's not a whole degree that we need," he added.
