Rare propaganda films of 1940s Britain released online

A rich archive of film footage of British life in the 1930s and 1940s has been released online for the first time by the British Council.

The films were a form of propaganda to showcase the best of British life at a time when fascism was gaining strength in Europe.

The documentaries deal, among other things, with the subtleties of cricket and the delights of Kew Gardens.

As Nick Higham reports, they offer a beguiling snapshot of life more than half a century ago.
