World Book Night 'has a real range' on shortlist
One million books, including works by Alan Bennett and John Le Carre, have been given away in the UK and Ireland to mark World Book Night.
They were distributed at a number of venues including homeless centres, pubs and hospitals in an attempt to encourage reading.
Some 20,000 people were asked to pick their favourite from 25 titles and were then given 48 copies to pass on to friends with their recommendation.
Organiser Jamie Byng said compiling a shortlist was ''not easy to do'' but the final selection had ''a real range that would appeal to readers all over the country''.
