Mark Kermode gives his verdict on the Oscar nominations

Silent film The Artist, Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady and Scorsese animation Hugo have been nominated for the 2012 Academy Awards.

Meryl Streep is up for Best Actress along with Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs and Viola Davis for The Help.

Best Actor nominees include Jean Dujardin for The Artist, Brad Pitt for Moneyball and Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Mark Kermode told Radio 5 live what he made of this year's nominations.
