'Women and children only'

The film Atlantic (1929) was the first sound film to dramatise the sinking of the Titanic - although it does not refer to it explicitly as the White Star Line forbade the production company from doing so.

Midway across the Atlantic Ocean, the ship strikes an iceberg, and because of a shortage of lifeboats the crew allows only women and children in and many couples are separated.

The BFI's Titanic season runs until 16 April.
