How Qatar woman topped Art Power list

Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, daughter of the Emir of Qatar, has topped the 2013 Power 100 list from ArtReview Magazine. The BBC's arts editor Will Gompertz reports.

The head of the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) has been named the most powerful figure in the art world.

Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani came top of ArtReview magazine's annual Power 100 due to her organisation's "vast purchasing power".

The BBC's arts editor Will Gompertz explained Sheikha Al-Mayassa's rise from number 90 in the Power 100 in 2011 to number one in 2013.

He speculated that Qatar's emergence into the art world "is about creating a knowledge economy".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 24 October 2013.
