Contemporary art's equivalent of a carpet

The Jameel Prize was set up to show that Islamic traditions continue to inspire contemporary art and design - not only in the Muslim world, but in non-Islamic countries too.

Tim Stanley, curator of the Jameel Prize and senior curator Middle Eastern Collections, Islamic galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum, singles out the carpet as a symbolic object of the Arab world - but in the case of the Jameel Prize it comes with a twist.

The Jameel Prize exhibition is now open to the public at the V&A.
