It took five years to convince television bosses to take a risk on a small programme about baking, but five series on, the Great British Bake Off has proved it has a recipe for success.
Viewing figures have continued to rise, with 13 million tuning in during the final on Wednesday night.
But what is it about soggy bottoms and showstoppers that keeps people watching?
