Playing and conducting simultaneously: 'exciting'

Julian Rachlin, the newly appointed principal guest conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia Orchestra, will lead the orchestra through a performance of works from Mozart and Beethoven, at the Barbican in London.

As part of a growing trend, Mr Rachlin, a virtuoso violinist, will be tasked with both playing and conducting simultaneously.

Speaking to the Today programme's Sarah Montague, he described the challenge as taking "more than a lifetime to master".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on November 14 2014.
