A&E target miss 'due to weekly variations'

Barbara Hakin, who is Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive of NHS England, has responded to the news that the NHS missed its four-hour A&E waiting time for the first time this winter.

She said that "there is inevitable weekly variation, that is why the target is over a three month period".

In the last week, 94.8% of patients were seen within four hours compared to 95.6% the week before. The target is 95%.
