See inside the Oxford animal lab

Animal procedures at Oxford University are all housed in the Biomedical Sciences building which opened five years ago.

Previously, research had been scattered across a number of university buildings. The aim of the new unit was to centralise and modernise the facilities.

In 2004 construction stopped after a campaign of intimidation by animal rights extremists. Work re-started more than year later, when the government stepped in and took over the costs of security.

In 2008, when the building opened, Fergus Walsh was the only journalist to be allowed inside. He has returned to see the facility now that it is fully operational and producing research results.
