IFS: 'NHS spend falling 9% per person over eight years'

The Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) has warned that public spending cuts will hit the NHS despite its protected budget.

IFS director Paul Johnson told the BBC's Hugh Pym that the health service would suffer strains because of the growing and ageing population.

"We spend a lot more on older people - so the actual effect is there's about 9% less to spend on each individual given what's happened to the structure of the population", he said, talking about the period from 2010-11 to 2018-19.
